What is a Noun?
A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, thing, or idea.
Examples:
- Person: teacher, Ali, doctor
- Place: school, Pakistan, Lahore
- Animal: cat, horse, elephant
- Thing: book, table, mobile
- Idea/Quality: honesty, happiness, courage
Types of Nouns
There are five main types of nouns:
- Proper Noun – names a particular person, place, or thing.
- Examples: Ali, Pakistan, Lahore, Monday
- Ali lives in Lahore.
- Common Noun – names a person, place, animal, or thing in general.
- Examples: boy, city, country, animal, book
- The boy is reading a book.
- Collective Noun – names a group of people, animals, or things.
- Examples: team, army, crowd, bunch, fleet
- The team is ready.
- Abstract Noun – names a quality, feeling, state, or idea that cannot usually be seen or touched.
- Examples: honesty, love, happiness, courage, freedom
- Honesty is a great virtue.
- Material Noun – names a substance or material from which things are made.
- Examples: gold, silver, wood, water, cotton
- The ring is made of gold.
