    This lecture introduces the concept of past perfect continuous tense with basic examples.

    Definition

    The Past Perfect Continuous Tense is used to show an action that had been continuing for a period of time before another action or point in the past.

    Example:

    • She had been studying for three hours before her mother came.

    Structure Formation

    🔹 Affirmative Form

    Structure:

    Subject + had been + verb-ing + object/complement

    The auxiliary had and been are used with all subjects.

    Example:

    • He had been waiting for me since morning.
    🔹 Negative Form

    Structure:

    Subject + had not been + verb-ing + object/complement

    Example:

    • He had not been waiting for me since morning.
    🔹 Interrogative Form

    Structure:

    Had + subject + been + verb-ing + object/complement?

    Example:

    • Had he been waiting for me since morning?
    🔹 Interrogative and Negative Form

    Structure:

    Had + subject + not + been + verb-ing + object/complement?

    Example:

    • Had he not been waiting for me since morning?

    Structure:

    Uses of Past Perfect Continuous Tense

    1️⃣ Action Continuing Before Another Past Action

    It is used to show that an action had been continuing for some time before another action took place in the past.

    Examples:

    • She had been cooking for two hours before the guests arrived.
    • They had been playing cricket for an hour when it started raining.

    Rule:

    Earlier continuing action → Past Perfect Continuous

    Later past action → Past Simple

    2️⃣  Cause or Explanation of a Past Situation

    It can be used to explain the cause of a condition or situation in the past.

    Examples:

    • He was tired because he had been working all day.
    • Her eyes were red because she had been crying.

    Since / For + time + Past Perfect Continuous + Simple Past

    • Since + starting point
    • She had been studying since morning before she took a break.
    • For + duration
    • They had been waiting for two hours when the train arrived.

    Common Mistakes in Past Perfect Continuous Tense

    ❌ She has been studying for two hours before her mother arrived.

    ✅ She had been studying for two hours before her mother arrived.
