Past Continuous Tense
Definition
The past continuous tense describes actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past.
It focuses on duration or an ongoing situation rather than a completed action.
Structure Formation
1. Affirmative Sentences
Singular Subjects (I, he, she, it, singular noun):
Subject + was + verb (base + ing) + object/complement
Example:
- Sam was flying the kite.
Plural Subjects (we, you, they, plural noun):
Subject + were + verb (base + ing) + object/complement
Example:
- The boys were making a noise.
2. Negative Sentences
Subject + was/were + not + verb (base + ing)
Examples:
- Sam was not flying the kite.
(Short forms: wasn’t, weren’t)
3. Interrogative Sentences
Was/Were + subject + verb (base + ing)?
Example:
- Was Sam flying the kite?
- Was he telling a lie?
4. Interrogative Negative Sentences
Was/Were + subject + not + verb (base + ing)?
Example:
- Was Sam not flying the kite?
5. Interrogative with Question Words
Question Word + was/were + subject + verb (base + ing)?
Examples:
- Why was Sam was flying the kite?
Functions of Past Continuous
1. Ongoing Action in the Past
Used for an action that continued for some time in the past.
Example:
- Max was wasting his time.
2. Describing Background Scenes
Used to set the scene or describe a situation happening in the background.
Example:
- I was standing outside the bus station.
3. With Past Simple (Interrupted Actions)
Used with the past simple tense to show that a longer action was interrupted by a shorter one.
Examples:
- When I saw him, he was reading a book.
- I saw him as he was leaving.
- He hurt himself while he was riding a bicycle.
Signal Words of Past Continuous
Past continuous often appears with time expressions that indicate an ongoing action in the past:
- while
- when
- as
- at that moment
- at that time
- all day / all night
- the whole day
- still
Examples:
- She was studying all night.
- They were talking while I was working.
- He was sleeping at that time.

Use past continuous for background or ongoing actions, and past simple for completed or interrupting actions.

Some verbs are not normally used in continuous form (even in past).

4. ❌ Using continuous with exact time expressions
Past continuous is not used for finished actions at a fixed time.
I was meeting him at 5 PM yesterday.
