Definition
The Present Continuous tense describes actions happening at the moment of speaking.
Structure Formation
1️⃣ Affirmative
Subject 1 (I):
I + am + V-ing + object/complement
Example:
I am taking tea.
Subject 2 (he, she, it, singular nouns):
Subject + is + V-ing + object/complement
Example:
Sam is flying the kite.
Subject 3 (we, you, they, plural nouns):
Subject + are + V-ing + object/complement
Example:
They are watching the movie.
2️⃣ Negative
Structure:
Subject + am/is/are + not + V-ing + object
Examples:
· I am not taking tea.
· Sam is not flying the kite.
· They are not watching the movie.
3️⃣ Interrogative
Structure:
Am/Is/Are + subject + V-ing + object
Examples:
· Am I taking tea?
· Is Sam flying the kite?
· Are they watching the movie?
4️⃣ Interrogative & Negative
Structure:
Am/Is/Are + subject + not + V-ing + object
Examples:
· Am I not taking tea?
· Is Sam not flying the kite?
· Are they not watching the movie?
5️⃣ Interrogative with Question Words
Structure:
Q.W. + Am/Is/Are + subject + V-ing + object
Examples:
· Why am I taking tea?
· Why is Sam flying the kite?
· Why are they watching the movie?
Interrogative with Question Words & Negative:
Q.W. + Am/Is/Are + subject + not + V-ing + object
Examples:
· Why am I not taking tea?
· Why is Sam not flying the kite?
· Why are they not watching the movie?
Uses of Present Continuous Tense
1️⃣ Continuity of an Action:
He is reading a book at the moment. ✅
2️⃣ Temporary Situation:
The children are playing on the roof. ✅
3️⃣ Planned Action in the Future:
What are you doing next Sunday? ✅
4️⃣ Changing Situations:
He is getting older day by day. ✅
5️⃣ Exclamations:
· Look! The bus is coming. ✅
· Listen! The baby is crying. ✅
Adverbs and Adverb Phrases
Common adverbs: now, nowadays, at this time, at the moment, these days, at present, currently
Examples:
· She is washing the clothes now. ✅
· It is hailing at the moment. ✅
Stative Verbs
Some verbs are generally not used in the progressive (continuous) form because they express a state rather than an action. These are called stative verbs or non-progressive verbs.
Thinking: know, believe, understand, remember, forget, realize, recognize, mean, suppose, imagine, think, doubt
Feelings: love, like, dislike, hate, prefer, admire, appreciate, care, envy, fear, respect, trust, want, wish, need
Possession
have, own, possess, belong, contain, include, consist of, lack, hold, owe
Perception
see, hear, smell, taste, feel, notice, seem, appear, sound, look
Relationship
resemble, equal, fit, suit, matter, depend, involve
Measurement
weigh, measure, cost, deserve
❌ I am understanding the lesson.
✅ I understand the lesson.
❌ He is having a car.
✅ He has a car.
❌ This flower is smelling sweet.
✅ This flower smells sweet.
❌ They are wanting money to spend.
✅ They want money to spend.
Note: when 'have' is used as action verb, it is used in progressive form.
when I saw him, he was having dinner.
